How Do Search Engines Work?

The term "search engine" is often used generically to describe both true search engines and directories. They are not the same. The difference is how listings are compiled.

Search Engines Vs. Directories

Search Engines: Search engines, such as HotBot, create their listings automatically. Search engines crawl the web, then people search through what they have found.

If you change your web pages, search engines eventually find these changes, and that can affect how you are listed. Page titles, body copy and other elements all play a role

Directories: A directory such as Yahoo depends on humans for its listings. You submit a short description to the directory for your entire site, or editors write one for sites they review. A search looks for matches only in the descriptions submitted.

Changing your web pages has no effect on your listing. Things that are useful for improving a listing with a search engine have nothing to do with improving a listing in a directory. The only exception is that a good site, with good content, might be more likely to get reviewed than a poor site.

Hybrid Search Engines: Some search engines maintain an associated directory. Being included in a search engine's directory is usually a combination of luck and quality. Sometimes you can "submit" your site for review, but there is no guarantee that it will be included. Reviewers often keep an eye on sites submitted to announcement places, then choose to add those that look appealing.

Meta Tag Help:

Site Name / Title: This should be a short, to-the-point, descriptive title of your web site. Around 60 characters in length.

Site Description: We recommend that you limit your META tag description to 20-25 words or about 150-200 characters of text. Anything longer will be cut off in the middle of the sentence and will look less professional. One thing to avoid with this tag is the temptation to load the description tag with keywords for your site. This tag should be used to provide a short but colorful description of your site that will entice searchers to click on your link instead of your competitor if they come up next to each other in the search results. Try to use only the keywords that you feel are the most important in you description.

Keywords: Try and put yourself into the shoes of your target audience and try to determine what keywords they are likely to search use when looking for a site like yours. Also, be aware that many words have more than one meaning. For example, a law firm using the keyword "injury" may find itself competing with a doctors office using the same word.

Here are more helpful tips to keep in mind when making your keywords selection:

  • When choosing keywords it is important to be specific. Usually, two-word and three-word phrases work better than single words. Words like 'travel' or 'software' are very vague and will put you in competition with hundreds of thousands (or millions) of other web sites that deal with these topics. Keywords like "Florida travel" or "contact management software" narrow the focus and give you a better chance of being found.
  • Don't overdo it with your keywords tag. The more words you put into this tag, the more you dilute the relevancy for all of the other words in the list. For better results keep keywords to around 15 words in total.Separate each keyword by a comma.
  • Keep in mind that most of the search engines are CASE SENSITIVE. This means that a search for "computers" will yield different results than "Computers". For common words, it is best to keep everything in lower case since a large portion of the population does not even capitalize most proper nouns in their searches.
  • Be careful with repetition. Many search engines will give you a 'spam penalty' if you repeat a word or phrase over and over. If there are words in the keyword list that you must repeat be sure to spread them out a little bit.
Category: Some Search Engines require that you specify a category within which your web site should be listed. Again, look at this from a users point of view. If your site was to pop-up, which category should that be in?... Travel?... Lodging?... Skiing?.... Perhaps even search around some Search Engine categories  to see what categories are available and list those in this field.

Text For Site: Should be 800 - 900 words in length. Some Search Engines look at and index web sites by Meta Tags but other search engines also look at the text on the page!. This text is what the site is truly about By putting a nice descriptive story and sprinkling your key words throughout this will, on some search engines, substantially increase your rankings!. The page that this text is places on is called the content doorway or start pages. Some Search engines ONLY index websites based on this text.
